Russia sued WhatsApp on grounds of privacy violation
Russia has sued WhatsApp for violating privacy laws. The step was taken since the messaging app failed to localize the data of Russian users within the Russian territory, which in turn is against Russia's personal data laws.
Russia states that it does not want the data of Russian citizens to be shared outside of its territory, given safeguarding the citizen's interest. It wants WhatsApp, to establish a local office within the country and save WhatsApp's data to Russian servers only.
In this case, WhatsApp might get fined anywhere between 1 million and 6 million roubles. However, Facebook's comment on this matter is eagerly awaited on this matter.
